A new credential has to say why it counts.
Functional Beverage Certified is new. It has no decades behind it, no accrediting body, and no alumni network. Pretending otherwise would be the fastest way to be worth nothing. What it has is a curriculum written by somebody who has sold the category from all three sides of the structure, and a set of sources you can go and check.
Who wrote it
The useful part of that history is the span rather than any one job.
- Retail. Family retail. The counter, the cold box, and the shopper holding two cans asking what the difference is.
- Distribution. Eight years as Marketing Director at Vinocopia. The book, the route, and what actually gets placed.
- Supplier. National brand representation. The sell sheet, and the gap between it and the shelf.
Most trade training is written from one tier and reads that way. A supplier deck teaches you the brand. A distributor program teaches you the book. Neither tells a retail buyer why the set should exist. That gap is the reason this course exists.
What it is built on
The course is not a summary of marketing copy. The material behind the six modules includes:
- The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, as amended, for the structure-function claim line
- NIH Office of Dietary Supplements fact sheets on the common ingredients
- Examine.com, for independent research summaries on adaptogens, nootropics and mushrooms
- Christopher Hobbs, Medicinal Mushrooms: The Essential Guide, Storey Publishing, 2020
- Hannah Crum and Alex LaGory, The Big Book of Kombucha, Storey Publishing, 2016
- BevNET and Nosh for trade coverage, and SPINS and Nielsen IQ for retail scan data on category velocity and channel share
What the credential is not
It is a professional education credential. It is not a licence to sell alcohol, not a licence to sell or handle any regulated cannabis product, and not a substitute for any responsible vendor training your state requires. Nothing in it is medical, legal or regulatory advice. The terms say the same thing in less friendly language.
Who issues it
The course is issued by Learn Brands LLC of Denver, Colorado, and delivered on the Learn Brands LMS. Passing the final exam issues a certificate in your name and a verifiable digital badge carrying a unique ID, so anybody can confirm the credential is real.
